I am by no means a medical expert, this is taken from my perspective and research. If you believe you may be experiencing this seek medical advice.

Firstly, when I talk about burn out I am talking about occupational burnout, or according to wikipedia otherwise commonly known as:

  • Burn-out
  • exhaustion disorder
  • neurasthenia

Who explains burnout as:

Intrinsic demands of the job, individual susceptibility, and poor work organization contributes to increased stress in health workers. Prolonged job stress may cause burnout, chronic fatigue, absenteeism, high staff turnover, reduced patient satisfaction, and increased diagnosis and treatment errors.

Causes

From the research I have done or experience I have had causes for burnout may include but are not limited to:

  • Time Pressures and lack of sleep are defiantly a cause, with all that I know about how important sleep is, there is no wonder not more people are not in a bad space.
  • Lack of control or Unclear expectations or goals, this may include having the goal posts change all the time. Depending on the personality traits this may stress finishers if they are never able to complete a task.
  • Long working hours, poor work-life balance and high workload, if an individual does not have time to rest, they may be prone and on their way to burn out.
  • Lack of support ( social and professional ) may stress individuals out when they are not able to get the help they need.
